The Project:

Forestry is the second most dangerous occupation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Injury prevention has been hampered by:

  • limited knowledge transfer of research results done elsewhere
  • rapid technological changes and spatial shifts in forestry work
  • lack of local research to identify long-term trends in injuries, fatalities and risk factors.

The project aims to:

  • Translate research results from social sciences, ergonomics, and kinesiology into health policy, programs and practices.

The Pilot Project was completed successfully, and involved using interviews and analysis of anonymous Newfoundland and Labrador workers’ compensation data from the forestry sector.  A proposal for a larger study submitted to CIHR is being revised and will be resubmitted in the next round of applications.
