Project:

In 2005 there were 557 slip and fall accidents in Newfoundland and Labrador with an associated claim cost of over $2.8 million dollars (Workplace Health Safety and Compensation Commission). Many of these accidents were the result of improper cleaning of floors in restaurants, hotels and hospitals. In Quebec, researchers have developed and implemented a program entitled ‘Floor cleaning as a preventive measure against slip and fall accidents’.

The aim of this project is to translate, adapt and transfer the knowledge and resources developed in Quebec to try to reduce the number of slip and fall accidents in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Current Status:

  • A ‘Floor Cleaning Toolkit’ is being prepared. The toolkit will include:
    • information on how to optimally clean a floor
    • an interactive game entitled ‘Beware! Slippery floor’
    • downloadable information sheets, training scenarios, quiz sheets and game sheets
The floor cleaning toolkit will be distributed to the purchasing offices of healthcare institutions, government agencies, and restaurants, hotels and other companies across the province
