SafetyNet appoints Dr. Scott Mackinnon as the new Research Chair in Workplace Health and Safety
SafetyNet joins two new collaborative research projects
March 2004
SafetyNet is pleased to announce its involvement in a new collaborative project with the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre, Dalhousie University, on reconfiguring physical and social environments to improve health in Atlantic Canada. The $2.4 million four year project, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), will bring together researchers from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Dalhousie University, and Memorial University (MUN). The project will concentrate on research infrastructure development via the formation of an Atlantic Network for Prevention Research. The Network will focus on three environments: schools, communities, and workplaces.
With co-investigators from across Canada, the project will mobilize the health research resources from the four Atlantic provinces, and will be the basis for incorporating illness and injury prevention into existing health systems in Atlantic Canada.
Further information on this project can be found at http://www.ahprc.dal.ca/CRD.pdf
Second collaborative research project on rural health
SafetyNet will also be involved in a six-year, CIHR-sponsored, research program entitled The Changing Physical and Social Landscape in Atlantic Rural Canada: A Centre Targeting Implications for Health through Research Enhancement, Trans-disciplinary Exchange and Informed Policy Implementation. The initiative will focus on building a research network devoted to rural health issues via the establishment of a new research centre based in the Atlantic Region. The SafetyNet team will focus on the workplace health and safety components of the Centre’s activities.
The role of the Centre will be to address priority research themes in rural health; to develop methodologies; and to promote knowledge translation. The Centre will support new rural health research in the three domains:
- Health Outcomes: life expectancy, morbidity, indicators of well-being, and social measures
- Rural Physical and Social/Environmental Contextual Factors: mainly climate change, ecological degradation, technological factors, societal transition, and resource reliant industries
- Spatial or Population Level Factors (e.g. global, Atlantic region, community, and individual).
In terms of methodology, the Centre will to try to increase the availability of large datasets taken from numerous areas, such as health, geography, social science and environment, among others, and will link them. The goals are to link administrative datasets in order to enhance existing capabilities in geographic information science and to promote new approaches to research into rural occupational and environmental health.
The dissemination of information will be accomplished by researching the uptake of innovation in health care by policymakers and rural health care providers; by organizing regular health summits for researchers and research users; by establishing the Atlantic Rural Health Summer School, a week-long intensive learning opportunity for rural health practitioners; and by establishing an ISBN-registered website that will allow readers to download the Centre’s technical reports and other Centre information.
The project will be undertaken by Principal Investigator Judith Guernsey from Dalhousie University, as well as an investigative team comprised of researchers from Memorial University, Saint Mary’s University, Nova Scotia Community College, Mount Allison University, UNB, and UPEI.
