IPPH-IHSPR Summer Institute 2005:
Rocky Harbour, NL, June 5–10, 2005
The 4th IPPH-IHSPR Summer Institute was held in Rocky Harbour, NL from June 5–10, 2005. In keeping with the overall objectives of the CIHR Summer Institute program, the 2005 Institute was designed to contribute to the development of a network of emerging population and public health (PPH) and health services and policy (HSP) researchers and research users across the country, to foster the creation and maintenance of complex interdisciplinary research teams and their community/policy-maker/practitioner partners and to build capacity in PPH and HSP research. In addition, it brought two new dynamics into play as compared to previous Summer Institutes — a stronger presence of Atlantic Canadian students and researchers; and a focus on rural and remote health issues.
The theme of this year’s Summer Institute was “Rural and Remote Research: Rhetoric and Reality”. Situating the Summer Institute in a small rural community gave participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in a rural and remote area that has been experiencing the effects of dramatic social, economic and policy change. They also heard from researchers, policy makers and community participants about the issues and challenges relevant to PPH and HSP research within that region, as well as within other rural and remote parts of Canada.
We would like to thank the funders of this year’s Summer Institute: the CIHR - Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), as well as the Summer Institute’s other co-sponsors, the CIHR Institute of Aging (IA), the CIHR Knowledge Translation Branch, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF), the Canadian Population Health Initiative of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI-CPHI) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).
